The NIRS Forage and Feed Consortium (NIRSC) mission is to promote and standardize the use of NIRS through the development of robust, accurate prediction calibrations. The consortium is composed of commercial laboratories, universities, government groups, plant research entities, and instrument companies. It was first incorporated in 1998, then in 2002 elected a Board of Directors, created bylaws, and established the non-profit organization.

The NIRSC collaborates to unify knowledge, accuracy, and appropriate applications of NIRS technology in the forage industry. Providing calibrations for multiple instrument platforms, the NIRSC leads by encompassing new NIR instrument technology as it becomes available. Through educational efforts, the NIRSC provides a reference for proper calibration and instrument use, as well as proper sample preparation and handling techniques. Membership, as a group, eliminates the effort and cost needed to produce calibrations individually.
